Cadillac's auto of 1902 saw the beginnings of a series of brilliant technological advances. Among these firsts were the V-6, V-8, V-12 and V-16 engines, a syncromesh transmission, air conditioning, hydra-matic gearbox, and overhead valve V-8 engine. As a result of these innovations, competitors were out-distanced to extinction or second place. To further these advances, Harley Earl, as the designer in 1949, endeavored to totally revolutionize body styles.

In this respect he succeeded! The styles came to be associated with America's desire for excess, luxury and power.
