The Corvette, another dream of General Motors' Chief Designer, Harley Earl, started in 1951 as a project to provide a low cost car geared to the college-age market. Ed Cole attempted the first designs, but Bob McLean was credited for the final design which introduced the wraparound windshield and small fins.
The smooth lines and the newly introduced fiberglass body, which was a production first, received rave reviews at New York's Motorama in 1953. The Corvette power-train was a 6-cylinder, 3-2 BBL carburetors coupled with an automatic powerglide transmission. In 1953, 185 units were sold and 2,800 were sold in 1954.
