~~Advertising~~
The symbols and pictures that once hung over merchants' doors were the beginnings of advertising. In about 1450, after the invention of printing in Germany, posters, handbills and pamphlets began appearing in England. Newspapers soon followed in the 1600's in England and at the beginning of the 18th century in America. As a result of these innovations in early media, advertising became more commonplace. With the early 19th century came the advent of magazines. In 1840 the emergence of advertising agencies in the United States further increased public awareness of this media. The advent of the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of travel necessitated the use of advertising to reach a larger consumer base.

The collectible field of advertising is vast and diversified. Its appeal touches the interests of everyone. It evokes nostalgic memories of products, places and people past. The art of advertising, the key to developing demand, reached its most colorful form in late Victorian and early 20th century America.
The brightly colored advertisements tried to entice, humor, and provide us with bottled miracles. They promised cures for everything from liver problems to baldness. These could be found in any magazine or newspaper, nailed on a large tree, or even painted on the side of a building. We were lured at every turn by some form of advertising. It was a prerequisite for the endurance of our free enterprise system of trade.
