In 1803, the first steam locomotive was built by a British mining engineer, Richard Trevitick. Later England became the first country to have a common carrier railroad. Colonel John Stevans of Hoboken, N.J. obtained the first charter to build a railroad in 1815.

The first common railroad in the U.S. was the Baltimore and Ohio which grew to be a very successful and long-lived company. During the 1830's, horses provided the power to pull the cars along the tracks. Also, during this time, the first American locomotive called the "Best Friend of Charleston" was used on the tracks of the South Carolina Railroad. Thus the era of railroads in America began.
